A LETTER FROM KENYA'S TOURIM MINISTER

AND I QUOTE:

''WELCOME TO KENYA''

''It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Kenya, a destination known for its remarkable diversity of landscapes, wildlife and cultures. Kenya is renowned as Africa's original safari destination, attracting explorers, adventurers and travelers for centuries, to discover the incredible diversity of attractions in Kenya, the Minister of Tourism and the Kenya Visitors guide have teamed up with the objective to ease the journey.

Kenya, as one of the world's premier destinations, the Ministry of Tourism has made it a priority to facilitate sustainable tourism development as part of the national heritage and to provide assistance and support to our visitors, our tourism sector and our fellow Kenyans.

For 2010 and beyond, our strategy is to sustain the momentum achieved in the last few years through aggressive marketing campaigns in the source markets. At the same time, we continue to focus on domestic tourism and emerging markets while actively supporting and promoting both Eco & Community Tourism in order to protect the destination for the future.

Domestic Tourism has become a significant form of tourism as it cushions off the tourism during the off peak seasons. Experience has taught us that we need to establish a solid domestic tourism base for sustainability. Besides that, we encourage Domestic Tourism so that all Kenyans can discover the great natural and cultural wealth of their homeland.

The Coastal region has sustained its position as the leading destination in Kenya accounting for more than 60% of the destination tourism activities-with this recognition, the Ministry with the help of the Kenya Tourism Board has opened an office in Mombasa, whose main objective is to address issues impacting on coast tourism such as local and international promotions, facilitations towards cruise liners docking in Mombasa, averting crisis and information dissemination.

Business/Conference Tourism has undoubtedly/increased over the years. Business travellers to Kenya will find all the facilities they need readily available.

The government has put in place guidelines to help identify investment opportunities. However we continue to receive more support from the Government, EU and other key donors who are responding to industry needs with renewed interest.

In Kenya, the environment & tourism have always been inextricably linked, and this is a truly symbiotic relationship. Wildlife in particular has always served as one of our major role in the great priority placed on wildlife preservation in Kenya. This is not just for the benefit of foreign visitors, Eco-tourism means more than just preserving wildlife for our visitors; it also means protecting our own world and its resources for the future benefit of Kenya, our people and our wildlife.

Recently Kenya has been elected a member of the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNTWO)to serve for the next four years, in which I lead the Kenyan delegation. My election to the UNTWO Executive Council as the Vice Chairman, provides Kenya with the opportunity to contribute to the preparation of the organization's programme of work and budget and in selecting topics of vital importance to the tourism sector for debate in the general assemblies.

In conclusion, Kenya is an ideal destination for all kinds of travel including Business and Conference and incentive travel. We will continue to aid sustainable tourism development and promote Eco tourism throughout.

Karibuni!
(signed)
Hon Najib Balala
Minister of Tourism ''
